Hydrogen and Alkaline Electrolysis

How It Works

Alkaline electrolysis, also known as electrolysis, is the process used to produce hydrogen from electricity and water through an electrochemical reaction:

2H2O + Energy = 2H2 + O2
Water + Electricity → Hydrogen + Oxygen

Piel by McPhy generators produce hydrogen and oxygen, released separately from the electrolytic cells, through the electrolysis of demineralized water.
The gasses are then cooled, dehumidified, and made available for use at the two outlet valves.

Sustainability

The production of zero-carbon energy is one of the key advantages of Piel by McPhy technology. The combustion of hydrogen with oxygen does not generate any residual products. With no smoke pollution, operators do not need to wear cumbersome breathing masks, nor is it necessary to install large purification systems.

Thanks to smart sensors integrated into the new Piel line, your equipment will be digitally connected to our Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). The sensors are capable of collecting, processing, and sharing data in real-time, (re)defining an operational scheme that allows for the optimization of productivity. With wireless connectivity, the Piel generator can – at any time, anywhere, and fully autonomously – transmit its data and self-analysis remotely. Diagnostics are thus able to provide the work team with a parameter on which to work promptly, for example by making changes to programming or organizing any maintenance operations.

Induction welding

Piel’s technology assists induction soldering systems used in optical instruments. During welding, a zone protected by an inert atmosphere is created, which includes a mixture containing hydrogen. This method allows you to avoid the use of liquid fluxes and the further pickling process.

High precision

Heating – melting – cutting operations

Piel electrolysers guarantee high precision flames, which allows the heated area of the pieces to be reduced to a minimum to obtain the best results during the processing phase.

Thanks to the high purity of Piel oxygen (99.5%), all metal cutting operations can be performed with maximum precision and speed.
The Piel equipment is also ideal for powering furnaces for the treatment of metals in a controlled atmosphere. With Piel, metalworking can take advantage of hydrogen and oxygen powered torches, a flexible solution free from the constraints of bottled gas. Among their advantages are flame regulation and deoxidation.

Use of alkaline electrolysis

Piel by McPhy uses alkaline electrolysis, one of the most proven and reliable technologies currently on the market.

Fully integrated turnkey system

Piel by McPhy offers a complete range of options: purification, demineralization, monitoring and control, cooling/pre-cooling system, and accessories for brazing – welding – heat treatment.

Remote supervision and maintenance

McPhy’s remote assistance module uses its sensors to collect data and provide all the support information operators need to increase operational efficiency.

Separate gas management

Separate gas generation offers the possibility to adjust the flame (neutral, oxidizing, reducing) and to use hydrogen and oxygen separately.

Convenience of use

The autonomous units of the electrolyzers can be transported anywhere for the production of hydrogen and oxygen. With its four pivoting wheels, the machine is easy to be moved wherever needed.

Safety

The gas is produced directly at the point of use, eliminating the need for volumes of compressed gas. Additionally, Piel equipment does not require any specific authorization from health authorities or fire brigade.

Cost control

Using gas produced by Piel requires about 5.5 kWh to produce 1 Nm3 of gas. Thanks to the specific characteristics of hydrogen and oxygen, the use of these gasses allows a 20% savings on brazing, enabling a higher work speed (+15-25%).
